A NOTE FROM THE PI

A Note from the PI

After nearly 25 years of advising graduate students, one thing has become clear to me: in graduate school, what matters most in the end is the relationship between people.

ACTRL is not a large lab. That's why I know each student by name, what experiments they've been working on, and where they're stuck — because I check in on them weekly. When something goes wrong, we figure it out together. When things work, we share that too. I've spent close to 25 years in bio, environmental, materials, and analytical chemistry, but the moments I find most meaningful are when a student produces their first piece of real data, and when they leave the lab having found their place in the world.

International students are welcome. Korean fluency is not required — I can supervise in English, and several students have completed their degrees that way.

Advising students is, in some ways, a difficult and demanding thing. But I enjoy it. If you're considering applying and not sure yet, just send an email. A conversation over coffee is the fastest way to find out if this is a fit.

Who We're Looking For

ACTRL recruits in the following formats:

UNDERGRAD INTERN

Undergraduate Researchers

Yonsei Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering juniors/seniors and outstanding students from other departments are welcome. Internships during semesters or breaks. Co-authorship on publications is possible.

MS

MS Program (2 years)

Comprehensive training in bio, environmental, materials, and analytical chemistry — extending to cosmetics, microplastics, and biodegradable plastics. Target: first-author Q1 journal publications.

MS·PHD INTEGRATED

MS-PhD Integrated Program (~5 years)

A combined master's and doctoral track for students who want to commit to the full doctoral journey from the start. For those who need to change course, exiting with a master's degree after 5 semesters is also possible.

PHD

PhD Program (3–5 years)

Design your own research direction and extend to industry, policy, or entrepreneurship tracks. Duration depends on research progress.

International students are welcome. English-language supervision is available, and limited Korean is not a barrier to research.

Who Fits Well

  • Students who take ownership of data accuracy
  • Those who don't stop at publication and care about industrial/societal impact
  • Curious about timely topics: K-beauty, microplastics, biodegradable plastics
  • Open to global engagement (international conferences, collaborations)

How to Apply

Send the following by email.

  1. Brief self-introduction (year, major, GPA)
  2. Research interest (from /en/research)
  3. Available start time (e.g., Fall 2026)
